Recently, Song Haiyun Research Group of the Institute of Nutritional Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Bioscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Fan Chunhai Research Group of the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, explored the biological effects of nano-ferric oxide and found that it is delaying aging and relieving neurodegenerative diseases. The potential effect of the aspect. Relevant research results are published online in Advanced Materials.

The researchers found that nano-ferric oxide exhibits a catalase-like activity in cells that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the main sources of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS).

ROS beyond physiological concentrations cause oxidative stress, induce cell death, and occur and develop with metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Individual aging is closely related.

In cell experiments, the researchers found that uptake of intracellular nano-ferric oxide significantly reduced ROS levels and apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide or neurotoxins over a range of doses. At the same time, ingestion of foods containing nano-ferric oxide can significantly improve the symptoms of the Alzheimer's disease fly model.

This model overexpresses human Abeta protein in the Drosophila nervous system, although it does not affect the development of Drosophila, but it leads to the progressive loss of mobility and premature death of adult fruit flies.

Experts believe that this study shows that nano-ferric oxide can alleviate oxidative stress caused by external stimuli, aging or genetic dysfunction, and has potential therapeutic uses in combating metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and aging.
